FLATBELLIES received an early endorsement from Doug Ferguson, lead golf writer for the Associated Press. More recently (2019), Doug was named recipient of the PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism.
The hardcover publisher promoted the book heavily, as seen here with a back cover ad in Publishers Weekly. Then, Barnes & Noble named it as a "Hot Book for the Summer."
Teachers in the Honors English Class at Derby High School (Wichita) wrote a study guide for FLATBELLIES, and taught the book for several years, spending a semester on the novel. At the end of each semester, the author would meet with the students for an afternoon Q & A. One teacher commented that in all her years of teaching novels, FLATBELLIES was the only book enjoyed by every student.
The author spent one year researching and outlining the trilogy. The three books are deeply intertwined. Foreshadowing is heavy, and a simple sentence in Book One might prepare the reader for a later event in Book One, Two, Three -- or all 3 books. The author then wrote the 3 books concurrently over the course of many years, with time off for books in other genres.
